Pragmatism

The appearance in the world of a genuinely new philosophy is at all times an event of very great importance. More particularly is this the case when the new philosophy embodies the prevailing temper of the age better than any of its older rivals; for in that case it is likely to establish itself in popular favor, to color the thoughts of the educated and half educated public, and to strengthen those elements in the mental atmosphere to which it owes its success.

The Pragmatism in my opinion is well adapted to the pre dominant intellectual temper of our time, and so is its adaptation to our lives.

The choices in front of us are only to give us different options, rather more often than not, it makes us feel cynical about our own choices. Even in such a case, suspicion is good, as there is some clarity in options, but doubt is wrong. It is like writing a hypothesis and accepting it, with the options are like, either accept the obvious or go without it. In case we have no rational means of deciding, then we believe one alternative at a venture, we choose what we “believe is true”, rather than what is actually true, in the process of doing it,  our perception of “knowing the truth”, turns into “believing and accepting the truth” as a consequence.

The matter is, however, more complicated in such cases as religious beliefs, where the chief benefit is derived from the emotional satisfaction of the belief itself, not from the useful actions to which it directly prompts. But here, too, the anti-thesis of ‘accepting’ or ‘going without’ is far too crude; we may regard the belief as far more or less probably, entertain a greater or less degree of hope that it may be true, and derive, accordingly, a greater or less proportion of comfort we should derive from complete belief.

More often than not, we get cornered without much options, even then never accept the hypothesis which you don’t believe in. Create a path for you, as you know what is correct and what is not, never hesitate to seek for help but let your choices be your own.

When you are not pragmatic with your decisions, then the choices become absurd but ultimately our opinions become irrelevant and we get branded with not being so mature. Among so many journeys in our life, the most important one is the pursuit of truth and being pragmatic is in a way to avoid errors and when that’s eliminated, what is remaining is the truth. So make your choices right.

The pragmatic theory of truth takes credit to itself-rightly as we think- for a due consideration of error. Most theories as to the nature of truth have tacitly assumed to begin with that all our beliefs are true, and have arrived at the incompatible, with the existence of errors. Pragmatism, emphasizes that some of our beliefs which we thought to be true have turned out to be mistaken, thus in a business of theory of truth, it is to show that how truth and falsehood are distinguished.

It is important to understand that “The truth” is not merely the agreement of our ideas with reality.
